aura, unilateral, throbbing, incapacitating, N/V, photophobia, phonophobia, worse with exercise, duration: 4-72 hours, patients just want to lay down in a dark/quiet room

4 stages of migraine

  1. prodrome (day or 2 before migraine) 2. aura (right before HA) 3. HA 4. postdrome

A

usually lasts 5-60 minutes. 1. can have visual disturbances 2. sensory disturbances (paresthesias) 3. motor (limb weakness) 4. speech (slurred)

  1. Cortical Spreading Depression (CSD) (and subsequent pain) triggered thu CN V and brainstem –> thalamus 2. wave of (CSD) from occiput –>rostral.
