Give 2 facts about the chiefs of a Plains Indian tribe
- Chiefs weren’t chosen, they were chiefs because of their wisdom, power or medicine.
- Chiefs didn’t make decisions they had visions
Give 2 examples of famous chiefs.
- Crazy Horse
- Sitting Bull
Give 3 challenges of surviving on the plains
- It was inhospitable (unable to sustain life)
- Lack of resources
- Lack of shelter
Give 3 ways Indians developed survival methods
- They had tipis which were easy to transport
- They hunted buffalo which they used for everything (food, clothes, items etc)
- They had horses that made it easier to travel the plains and to hunt buffalo

- They enabled Indians to travel across large plains
- Used in raids on other tribes
- Made hunting buffalo easier
Explain how buffalo’s were important to Plains Indians
- Guided Indians to water supplies
- They used the buffalo sustainably (killed no more than needed + used everything)
- Provided meat
- Indians followed the buffalo, they were normadic
How did Plains Indians view the land?
They believed in Wakan Tanka and that the land is sacred and belonged to nobody

- To raid other tribes
- It gave warriors the opportunity to show bravery
- To increase status of chiefs such as Sitting Bull and Crazy Horse

Divided Indian territory from the rest of the USA and made it illegal for settlers to move onto Native American land on the Great Plains
