1.4a levels of organization Flashcards
atoms
smallest unit of matter that forms a chemical element. everything is made of atoms
simple molecules
different atoms bonded together to form simple molecules
macromolecules
large molecules, often the result of the polymerization of smaller molecules
subcellular structures
specialized structures for a specific function within the cell
cells
smallest unit that is capable of carrying out all functions of life
tissue
a group of cells that work together to perform a specific task
organs
a group of different tissues that form a singular unit and perform a singular function
organs systems
a group of organs that interact to perform a similar function
organisms
- a single living organism
- the unit for natural selection
populations
- a group if organisms in the same species that live in the same area, at the same time
communities
- all the different populations living in the same area at the same time
ecosystems
- biotic and abiotic factors in an area
- study energy flow and nutrient cycling
biomes
- large geographic areas with similar abiotic factors
- groups of similar ecosystems make up individual biomes
biosphere
regions of earth where life exists (below the surface and into the atmosphere)
