1486 Lovell & Stafford Flashcards
Give an overview of the Lovell & Stafford rebellion
Francis Viscount Lovell, a former Lord Chamberlain, and his Yorkist associates Humphrey and Thomas Stafford, raised troops to kill the king as he progressed to the north of England
What was the main cause of the Lovell & Stafford rebellion?
Dynastic issues and the succession
Where was the Lovell & Stafford rebellion?
York and Worcestershire
Why did the rebellion gain little traction?
There was no Yorkist pretender to rally around
Why did the Lovell & Stafford rebellion occur so soon?
The Yorkist defeat at Bosworth and their replacement by the Tudors brought about dynastic unrest. Yorkists attempted to remove Henry VII and replace him with either the Earl of Warwick or De la Pole
Why did the Lovell & Stafford rebellion occur in the north?
The north was a Yorkist stronghold as it had been Richard III’s seat of power
How did Henry initially respond to the Lovell & Stafford rebellion?
Henry used agents to follow the Staffords and Lovell. As a result, the Staffords were arrested and Lovell was forced to flee
Why was the level of threat low?
They did not manage to raise many rebels
Why did the Lovell & Stafford rebellion fail?
Lack of credible alternative candidate as king – very few of the commons were willing to rise in support of the noble leaders
Lovell and Staffords were only minor nobles – had no great wealth and no large group of followers/servants on which to base a rising
Henry already had an efficient intelligence operation – successfully tracked the rebels when they fled and did not give them time to become a threat
No backing from overseas
How did Henry deal with the rebels?
Humphrey was executed
Thomas was imprisoned
Lovell escaped, but rallied to support Simnel
