14.4 receptors Flashcards
pacinian corpuscle
responds to changes in mechanical pressure
features of pacinian corpuscle
-is specific to only a single type of stimulus (mechanical pressure)
how an action potential is triggered
-when a PC is triggered, the lamella are deformed and press on the nerve ending
-this causes deformation of the stretch mediated Na+ channels
-these channels open and sodium ions diffuse into cell (depolarization)
-this creates a generator potential and if it reaches threshold it triggers an action potential
how is resting potential maintained in the sensory neuron when no pressure is applied
membrane is more permeable to potassium ions and less permeable to sodium ions
rod cells
-cant differentiate different wavelengths of light
-images seen in black and white
-detects light of low intensity
-many rod cells are connected to a single sensory neurone
cone cells
-each have their own separate bipolar cell connected to sensory neurons
