14.2 The Effect of STIs on the Reproductive System Flashcards
Provide 2 examples of viral STIs
Genital herpes, HIV/AIDS
Provide 2 examples of bacterial STIs
Chlamydia, Gonorrhea
What is pelvic inflammatory disease (PID)?
Infection of the female reproductive organs, typically caused by untreated bacterial STIs like chlamydia or gonorrhea
Why is PID a concern
It can lead to scarring in the fallopian tubes, infertility, chronic pelvic pain, and an increased risk of ectopic pregnancy, where a fertilized egg implants outside the uterus
Some people who become infected with an STI may show no symptoms. How does this present a risk to the health of the infected individual?
An individual with no symptoms may not seek treatment, leading to complications such as infertility, chronic pain, or more severe infections like PID
Untreated infections can also weaken the immune system and increase susceptibility to other diseases
Some people who become infected with an STI may show no symptoms. How does this present a public health risk?
Without symptoms, infected individuals can unknowingly transmit the STI to others, increasing its spread
This silent transmission complicates public health efforts to contain and reduce infection rates, particularly if the infection continues to go undiagnosed and untreated
