1.4 Wired and Wireless Networks (Types of Networks) Flashcards
What are the advantages to Networks?
Users can share peripherals.
Users can share files.
Communication.
Servers can control security, software updates and a back up of data.
Users can access their files from any computer in the network.
features of a Local Area Network (LAN)?
Covers a small geographic area located on a single site.
All hardware for a LAN is owned by the organisation using it.
LANs are wired with UTP cable, fibre optic cable or wireless using WiFi.
Used in homes, schools etc.
Featured of a Wide Area Network (WAN)
Covers a large geographic area, connecting LANs together.
infrastructure between the LANs is leased from telecommunication companies who own and manage it.
WANs are connected with telephone lines, fibre optic cables or satellite links.
What are the disadvantages to Networks?
increased security risk to data
Malware and Viruses spread very easily between computers
If the server fails, the computer connected to it may not work
The computer may run more slowly if there is a lot of data travelling through the server
