1.4 The Profession of Psychology Flashcards
The training of Australian psychologists is collectively overseen by:
- Australian Psychological Society (APS)
- Heads of Departments and Schools of the Psychology Association (HODSPA)
- Australian Psychology Accreditation Council (APAC) and
- Psychology Board of Australia (PsyBA).
The functions of the PsyBA include:
registering psychologists and provisional psychologists
developing standards, codes and guidelines for the psychology profession
handling notifications, complaints, investigations and disciplinary hearings
assessing overseas trained practitioners who wish to practise in Australia
approving accreditation standards and accredited courses of study
Another implication of registration is that it requires each individual to have
indemnity insurance
indemnity insurance offers
individuals protection against malpractice claims
Students often express confusion about the overlap between the
APS and AHPRA/PsyBA
the main difference between the APS and AHPRA/PsyBA
is their constitutions and thus their functions
The PsyBA and AHPRA are regulatory bodies primarily concerned with the
lawful training, registration, and practice of psychology
If you want to be a psychologist, you must be registered with
AHPRA/PsyBA
The APS is a professional body, and as such membership is entirely
optional
