14 - Populations and sustainability Flashcards
Conservation?
The maintenance of biodiversity and sustainability of biological resources using different methods of in situ and ex situ management
Preservation?
The protection of ecosystems, habitats and species for the future without allowing any use by humans
What is it easier to conserve, rather than preserve?
Conservation takes into account how habitats and species change over time (due to environment) so must adapt constantly
What is difficult about preservation?
It is almost impossible to keep a species/habitat exactly as it is 9protect from human use)
Economic reason for conserving biological resources?
Source of raw material (and employment for those who process these materials)
food security - continuous supply
ecotourism, source of national income for exporting biological resources
Social reasons for conserving biological resources?
Rural areas can gain stability through fishing/forestry,
areas set aside for forestry invite people to observe wildlife
Ethical reasons for conserving biological resources?
Duty to conserve resources for livelihood of future generations, native people around the world relying on our biological resources to maintain their own
What is a sustainable resource?
A biological resource renewed by the activity of organisms - always enough for us to use without it running out
What does sustainability enquire?
Areas surrounding ecosystems are not harmed and that the biodiversity in those ecosystems is not harmed
Sustainable management?
Aims to provide for the needs of an increasing population without harming ecosystems, both natural and artificial, and their ability to provide materials and services for us
Write about coppicing, nitrogen cycle and chapter 13 ???
!!!!
How can the decline in fish stocks be prevented?
Exclusion zones (fishing is banned in), limit on no. of boats for a certain species or area; ban at times of the year; limit on yearly fish mass collection; restocking sea with young fish; smaller nets
