1.4- Networks Flashcards
What is a LAN?
Local area network
what is a WAN?
Wide area network
Describe what a LAN is.
A LAN is
- a local area network
- it connects computers and other devices in a small area
- most LANs connect workstations and personal computers to access data
- eg. Printers
Describe a WAN
A WAN is
- a computer network that spans a relatively large area
- typically in WANs they consist of two or more local-area networks.
- computers connected to a wide area network are often connected through public networks.
- eg. the telephone system
Advantages of networks
- sharing devises such as printers
- software licences are likely to be cheaper
- security is good
- files can be shared
- data is easy to backup
Disadvantages of networks
- purchasing networks cabling and file servers can be expensive
- managing a large network is complicated.
- if the file server breaks down the files on the server becomes inaccessible
Factors that affect the performance of network
- Number of users
- error rate
- transmission media
- bandwidth
- latency
Why does number of users affect the performance of networks
Internet speeds slow down will occur when a large number of people try to connect to the internet at the same time
Why does error rate affect the performance of networks
The number of corrupted bits expressed as a percentage or fraction of the total sent
Why does transmission media affect the performance of networks
Integrated cabling design, selection of router, correct cabling operations
Why does bandwidth affect the performance of networks
Bandwidth is the amount of data that could potentially be transferred by that network in a given period of time.
Why does latency affect the performance of networks
The large bandwidth-delay product of high latency connections
Whats the advantages of a Client-Server network
- Easier to take backups of all shared data
- Easier to install software updates
- Easier to manage security of files
Whats the disadvantages of a Client-Server Network
- Requires IT specialists
- Can be expensive to set up and maintain
- A single point of failure. Users will lose access if the server fails.
Advantages of Peer-To-Peer networks
- Very easy to maintain. Specialists staff are not required
- Cheaper to set up.
- No dependancy on a single machine
