1.4 Network Performance Flashcards
What is Bandwidth
Bandwidth is the rate at which data can be transferred across a connection.
It is measured in bits per second
What is contention ratio?
The number of users sharing the same Internet Service Provider (ISP) Bandwidth
The lower the contention ratio the higher the quality of service
A 50:1 contention ratio means that up to 50 users are sharing the same Bandwidth at one time
What is a backbone?
A high-bandwidth cable connecting LANs or a WAN, expected to carry heavy data traffic
What is ethernet?
The most common protocol used with network cables
A system for connecting a number of computer systems to form a local area network
What is Fibre optic?
Optic cables that transfer data using light signals
What is Wi-Fi?
A wireless network protocol to transfer data by radio waves
Name two examples of factors that affect performance of wired networks
Contention ratio (Number of active users)
Total bandwidth available
Type of cable connection (Fibre optic, Cat-6 ethernet, Cat-5 ethernet)
What are bands?
A range of frequencies than can be used for the Wi-Fi network
What is a channel?
A subdivision of a band.
They help reduce interference caused by nearby devices
What is interference?
When Wi-Fi signals overlap each other. This reduces network performance
Wi-Fi performance is affected by…
Radio interference from other users using the same frequency
Physical walls or floors which can block the Wi-Fi signal
A limited amount of vannels for all users to access at the same time
