What is outsourcing?
Hiring a party outside the business to perform services and create goods. Usually done to get specialist help or advice on a product or service. E.g. HR management
Definition of Dismissal
When an employee is asked to leave the business as a result of a serious offence they have committed and often is in effect immediately
Definition of redundancy
When an employer is informed and given notice that their position in the business no longer exists and they are given a certain time frame with which to leave by
What is a trade union?
An organisation set up to help and protect workers and improve their conditions.
E.g. Teachers Union, FBU (Fire brigade union)
Define Collective Bargaining
When an employer discusses with one or a few representatives on behalf of the whole workforce about problems such as pay rises and working conditions
What is an individual approach?
This allows employees to be treated on an individual basis, however it is every time consuming for employers and is more appropriate for smaller businesses
Define recruitment
Identifying and attracting potential applicants
What is internal recruitment?
When a business looks to fill a vacancy from within its existing workforce
What is external recruitment?
When a business looks to fill a vacancy from any suitable applicant from outside the business
What is ‘On the job’ training?
Training for employees that is provided within the workplace
What is ‘Off the job’ training?
Training for employees that happens off site from the workplace
Define Chain of Command
The path of authority along which instructions are passed from the CEO downwards.
Define Span of Control
the number of subordinates under the manager’s direct control
Define Delegation
The assignment of authority to another person to carry out specific activities. The process of distributing and entrusting work to another person.
What is Centralisation?
A business structure where business decisions are made at the top at the Head Office and distributed down the chain of command
