1.4 - Forming bonds Flashcards
What are compounds?
What is formed when elements combine
What forms when a metal reacts with a non-metal?
Ions are formed
Describe how an ionic bond is formed (4)
1) When a metal reacts with a non-metal, ions are formed
2) Metal atoms lose one or more electrons to form positively charged ions
3) Non-metals ions gain electrons to form negatively charged ions
4) The oppositely charged ions attract each other strongly and the compound has ionic bonds
What does the chemical formula of an ionic bond tell us?
The simplest ratio of ions in the compound
What does the chemical formula NaCl tell us about the ionically bonded sodium chloride?
Sodium chloride is made from equal numbers sodium and chloride ions
What does the chemical formula CaCl2 tell us about the ionically bonded calcium chloride?
For every one calcium atom, there are two chloride atoms
What happens when non-metals combine?
Their atoms share electrons to form covalent bonds
What forms when a non-metal reacts with a non-metal?
Molecules are formed
What does the chemical formula of a molecule tell us?
The number of atoms that have bonded together in the molecule
What can covalent bonds be shown as in diagrams?
Lines between the atoms bonded together
What does the chemical formula C3H8 tell us about the covalently bonded propane?
It is made of three carbon atoms and eight hydrogen atoms
