Fear
The immediate alarm reaction to present danger, characterized largely by a strong motivation to escape.
Fear Response
Activates the sympathetic nervous system and the sympatho-adrenomedullary (SAM) axis.
“Fight or Flight” response
Generalized Anxiety Disorder
Mainly consists of anxiety.
Apprehension/Worry about real or perceived future threats.
Panic Disorder
Mainly Consisting of Fear.
Emotional and Physiological reaction to real or perceived immediate threats
Post-traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)
involves a mixture of both anxiety and fear-related symptoms
How can neurobiological effects of fear response be measured?
It can be measured by fMRI Imaging (Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging)
How can physiological effects of fear response be measure?
By a polygraph machine. It can measure skin perspiration, breathing rate and heart rate.
What is active in the brain during distant threats?
Prefrontal Cortex
What is active during Close, immediate threats?
Tend to shut down prefrontal cortex and activate midbrain and Periaqueductal gray
Panic Attacks
are abrupt surges of intense fear or discomfort that reach a peak within minutes.
