14-15: Ecdysozoa + Squidgy Deuterostomes Flashcards
Name the four main groups of Arthropods, and the category which encompasses three of them
Chelicerates, Myriapods, Crustaceans, Insects (Mandibulata includes the latter 3)
What feature is common to all arthropods?
Jointed Appendages
Name the three classes of Chelicerates
Pycnogonida (Sea Spiders), Merostomata (Xiphospurida -> Horseshoe Crabs), Arachnida (Includes spiders, scorpions, ticks, mites, etc.)
Name the three key features of Chelicerates, and the two features they lack
- First pair of appendages modified to form chelicerae (mouthparts)
- Pair of pedipalps
- Four pairs of legs
No antennae and No mandibles
Name the two main groups of Myriapods and their main feeding methods
Diplopoda (oldest known terrestrial animals) - decomposers; Chilopoda - mainly carnivorous
What two features do myriapods share with insects?
Trachea and Mandibles
How many pairs of antennae do crustaceans have?
2
What relationship do crustaceans in general have to water?
Primarily aquatic - found in all marine and freshwater environments; all except terrestrial isopods require water to reproduce
Describe barnacle reproduction
They are hermaphroditic - penis extends over and fertilises neighbour
How successful are insects as a class?
The most successful animal class - only one major lineage has gone extinct
Insects were the first animals to do what?
Have powered flight
Distinguish between the terms hemimetabolous and holometabolous
Hemimetabolous = partial change during metamorphosis, immature forms have similar shape to adult form
Holometabolous = whole change during metamorphosis (e.g., caterpillar -> butterfly)
What are coleoptera and are they successful?
Coleoptera = beetles (more species than any other animal class)
What are the TWO common developmental features of Deuterostomes?
Radial Cleavage in development; Blastopore develops into anus
What are some examples of the subphylum Echinodermata?
Starfish, Brittle Stars, Sand Dollars, Sea Cucumbers, Sea Urchins
