13.6 Organisation of the nervous system Flashcards
1
Q
what 2 systems is the nervous system organised into
A
- central nervous system (brain and spinal chord)
- peripheral nervous system (neurones that connect CNS to the rest of the body)
2
Q
what is the somatic nervous system
A
- under conscious control
- carries impulses to the muscles
3
Q
what is the autonomic nervous system
A
- works constantly
- subconscious
- carries impulses to glands, smooth muscle and cardiac muscle
- divides into parasympathetic and sympathetic
4
Q
what does the sympathetic nervous system do
A
- fight or flight
- neurotransmitter = noradrenaline
- SALIVARY GLANDS: saliva production reduced
- LUNG: bronchial muscle relaxed
- KIDNEY: decreased urine secretion
- STOMACH: peristalsis reduced
- SMALL INTESTINE: peristalsis reduced
5
Q
what does the parasympathetic nervous system do
A
- relaxing responses
- neurotransmitter = acetylcholine
- SALIVARY GLANDS: saliva production increased
- LUNG: bronchial muscle contracted
- KIDNEY: increased urine secretion
- STOMACH: gastric juice secreted
- SMALL INTESTINE: digestion increased
