1.3.4 Output devices - printing technology Flashcards
What are output devices?
devices that take data processed by a computer and turn it into a human-readable form
What are the two types of inkjet printers?
thermal bubble and Piezoelectric crystal
how to thermal bubble printers work?
heat from resistors within the printer causes ink to vaporize and form tiny bubbles. As each bubble expands, ink is ejected onto the paper.
How do Piezoelectric crystal printers work?
The crystal vibrates in and out when it receives an electric current. Ink is ejected when it vibrates in and new ink is drawn to replace it when it goes out.
printer interrupts
signals sent to the processor by the printer that cause it to stop and service the printer’s issue
printer drivers
Software that converts the data to be printed in a form specific to a given printer
printer buffers
temporary memory that stores data (documents) until they are ready to be printed out
Laser printers
printers that use electrostatic charges and dry toner to print. They are better suited to large jobs
Dot matrix printers
strike an inked ribbon which imprints dots to form letters on the page
3D printers
produce solid 3D objects using plastic filament, powdered resin etc.
