1.3.3 Flashcards
What are protocols
Sets of rules defining how two devices communicate with each other
Why are protocols standard
They are standard so devices from different manufacturers don’t have problems communicating
Describe the structure of the internet
The internet is a global network of interconnected networks
What does TCP stand for
Transmission Control Protocol
What does IP stand for
Internet Protocol
What is the function of the application layer during the data transmission
The protocols in this layer provide access to email, files and websites across an IP network
What is the role of the transport layer during data transmissions
The TCP part of the TCP/IP protocol resides in this layer. It is responsible for dividing messages into packets, adding sequence numbers and error correction info
What is the role of the network/data layer during data transmissions
The protocols in this layer are responsible for actually transmitting and receiving data through cable or wireless
What is the role of the internet layer during data transmissions
The IP part. It is responsible for managing the address of source and destination locations
What does the transport layer do when it receives the data
Removes the port number and reassembles the packets
What does the network layer do when it receives the data
Removes the IP address
What does the link layer do when it receives the data
Removes the MAC addresses
