13.1 Food chains and energy transfer Flashcards
How is sunlight stored in plants
Chemical energy.
What kind of organisms are producers?
Photosynthetic organisms (manufacture organic substances using light energy, water, carbon dioxide, mineral ions)
How do consumers obtain their energy?
Obtain energy by feeding on other organisms.
What do Saprobionts (decomposers) do?
Break down complex molecules in dead organisms to make simple ones.
release in a form that can be absorbed by plants (recycling).
What does a Food Chain describe?
feeding relationship between producers and consumers.
What is a Food web?
food chains within a habitat that link.
it is complex.
What is Biomass?
Total mass of living material in a specific area at a given time.
- How is biomass measured
2. How is chemical energy stored in dry mass measured?
- Using dry mass per given area in a given time.
2. Using calorimetry.
How is a parasitic relationship different to a symbiotic relationship?
Parasitic- one benefits from the relationship.
Symbiotic- both benefit.
What is an ecosystem?
The living and non living components of an area.
How do primary secondary and tertiary consumers obtain their energy?
Primary consumers directly eat producers.
Secondary consumers eat primary consumers.
Tertiary consumers eat secondary consumers.
What is each stage referred to as in a food chain?
Trophic level.
What do arrows show is food chains?
Direction of energy flow.
What do Saprobionts tend to be
Fungi or Bacteria.
