1.3 Non-random sampling Flashcards
What happens in quota sampling?
An interview or researcher sleects sample that reflects the characteristic of whole population
How would you conduct quota sampling?
Population is divided into groups according to characteristic
Size of each group determines the proportion of sample having that characteristic
You would meet people assess their group after interview to alloclate to appropriate quota
continues until filled
if person refuses to be interviewed or quota full - simply ignore to move onto next person
What is opportunity sampling?
Consist of taking samples from people who are avaliable at the time of the study is carried out and fit criteria you are looking for
How is opportunity sampling conducted?
First 20 people you meet outside of a supermarket on Monday morning
Advantages of quota sampling
- Allows a small sample to be representative of population
- No sampling frame is needed
- Cost-effective
- Easy for comparison between different groups of population
Disadvantages of quota sampling
- Non-random sampling can introduce bias
- Population divdied into groups might be costly or inaccurate
- Increasing scope of study group increases number and expense
- Non-responses not recorded
Advantages of opportunity
Easy to carry out
inexpensive
Disadvantges of opportunity
Unlikely to provide a representative sample
Highly depdent on indvidiual researcher
