1.3 - Networks, connections and protocols Flashcards
What is the purpose of the server in a client-server
Controls access and security to one shared file store, manages access to the Internet, manages printing, provides an email services and backup of data.
What can a client do in a client-server
Make requests to the server for data and connections
Advantages of a client-server
Easier to manage security files, take backup of data and install software updates to all computers
Disadvantages of a client-server
Expensive, requires IT expert, single point of failure
What is a peer (peer-peer)
A computer on a network that is equal to all other computers. They serve their own files, are responsible for their own security and backup
Advantages of peer-peer
Easy to maintain, no specilaist required, cheap, no dependency on server, no expensive hardware
Disadvantages of peer-peer
Less secure, users need to manage own backup, can be difficult to maintain a well ordered file store
What is a network interface card
They use a protocol to determine how the connection should work, allow a device to connect to either a wired or wirless network
What is a wireless access point
Allows wireless enabled devices to connect to a network - more convenient. Less bandwith than a wired connection, more security concerns. Not always as reliable or strong
