1.3 - networking Flashcards
What is a network
a collection of computer devices that are able to communicate with each other
What is a LAN network
Local Area Network, a collection of devices in a network connected together in one area such as a building
What is a NIC for
Network interface controller, a hardware component that allows computers to connect to each other wirelessly or with an ethernet cable
What is a switch for
connects multiple devices each other
what is bandwidth
the amount of data that can go through a network per second
what is a star network
a network all connected in the middle with a switch
what is WAN
wide area network (the internet)
what does an email server do
connects two devices so they can send emails to each other and stores their email addresses
what are the advantages of using the cloud
cheap, can access data on multiple devices, data isn’t lost if computer crashes
what are the benefits of using a wired/wireless connection
wired is faster and more reliable, wireless is cheaper and you don’t need physical wires
what is bluetooth
a wireless way to connect devices
what are the three types of address for a computer and their properties
IPv4 - 4 sets of 8 bit numbers
IPv6 - 8 sets of 16 bit numbers
Mac address - 6 sets of 8 bit numbers
what is an IP address for
a unique number to your device that can identify your device
what are protocols for
a set of rules for communication so all computers can understand and communicate with each other
how is data moved across a network
sent in packets across wires, each packed has a sender and receiver address, sorted by switches and routers, can be blocked by firewalls, if lost then the server will request them again
