13% Introduction, Overview and Etiology (EBIG chapters 1 and 4) Flashcards
Define ABI
An injury to the brain that is not hereditary, congenital,
degenerative, or induced by birth trauma.
Define TBI
A TBI is an alteration in brain function, or other evidence
of brain pathology, caused by an external force
Characterize mild brain injuries
Brief or no loss of consciousness. (inability to recall what happened)
AOC-24
PTA- 0-1 day
GCS- 13-15
Characterize moderate brain injuries
Unconsciousness for any period up to 24 hours (confusion & bleeding)
AOC- <24
PTA- 1-7 days
GCS- 9-12
Characterize severe brain injuries
A period of loss of consciousness for more than 24 hours
PTA- 7+
GCS- 3-8
Incidence of TBI
75% of TBIs that occur each year are mild TBI
Prevalence of brain injury
Second most prevalent disability in the U.S
List chronic conditions caused or accelerated by TBI
Aspiration Pneumonia
Seizures
Septicemia
Circulatory problems
Standards for rehab facilities
Compliance with quality and
performance standards
Survey sites periodically
Look for evidence of currently
accepted standards of practice
Consult with the organization to
improve delivery of services
Describe the Olmstead decision
States must administer their services, programs and activities “in the most integrated setting appropriate to the needs of
qualifies individuals with disabilities”
What is the Model Systems of Care
TBIMS conducts prospective, longitudinal research to demonstrate the course of recovery and outcomes following TBI at 16 centers (NIDILRR)
mTBI defintion
traumatically induced physiological disruption of brain function (alteration of mental state)
mTBI incidence
mTBI represents 75% of all TBIs that occur in the U.S.
List symptoms of mTBI
Headache
Seizure
Nausea
Light/Noise sensitivity
Dizziness
Poor memory
Slowed processing speed
Irritability
Anxiety
What does the acronym PPCS stand for & what is its incidence?
Persistent post concussive symptoms & 10-15%
