1.3 Epithelial tumors Flashcards
1
Q
keratoacanthoma
- what does it look like
- how does it progress, what timeframe
A
- well-differential squamous cell carcinoma
- cup-shaped tumor with central keratin plug (like a volcano)
- develops rapidly (2-10 weeks) then regresses spontaneously
2
Q
seborrheic keratoses
-histological finding
A
-histology hallmark: keratin pseudocysts (“Horncysts”)
3
Q
seborrheic keratosis
- clinical finding
- what is it
A
- coin-like, stuck-on appearance
- raised, discolored plaque
- benign squamous tumor
3
Q
Acanthosis nigricans
- clinical findings
- common locations
- what associated with? (2)
A
- “thick, dark” velvet like skin (epidermal hyperplasia)
- axilla, groin
associated with:
- insulin resistance (T2DM)
- malignancy (esp gastric carcinoma)
3
Q
what is it?
-cup-shaped papule with central keratin plug (like a volcano)
A
keratoacanthoma
4
Q
actinic keratosis
-clinical finding
A
- aka solar/senile keratosis
- precursor lesion to squamous cell carcinoma
- hyperkeratotic, scaly plaque
6
Q
What skin problems should you suspect a GI tumor?
A
- Suspect GI carcinoma in Leser-Trelat sign (sudden multiple seborrheic keratoses)
- Suspect gastric carcinoma in acanthosis nigricans
6
Q
what is it?
- thick, dark velvet like skin
- axilla, groin
A
acanthosis nigricans
7
Q
basal cell carcinoma
-classic appearance (3 things)
A
- elevated nodule
- central, ulcerated crater
- telangiectatic vessels surround it
8
Q
what is it?
- coin-like, stuck-on appearance
- raised, discolored plaque
- histology hallmark: keratin pseudocysts
A
seborrheic keratosis
(a benign squamous tumor)
9
Q
actinic keratosis
-histology
A
- cytologic atypia in lower levels of epidermis
- blue-gray elastic fibers in dermis from solar exposure (solar elastosis)
10
Q
classic locations of:
- basal cell carcinoma
- squamous cell carcinoma
A
- upper lip
- lower lip
“BS”
12
Q
skin cancer:
- list main types
- which ones most common, which ones most severe?
A
- basal cell carcinoma (8/10 frequency)
- squamous cell carcinoma (2/10 frequency)
- melanoma (rare)
melanoma is most common cause of skin cancer death. other 2 are rarely metastatic.
14
Q
Leser-Trelat sign
A
- sudden onset of many seborrheic keratoses (stuck on coins)
- suggests GI carcinoma
15
Q
what is it?
- elevated nodule
- central, ulcerated crater
- telangiectatic vessels surround it
A
basal cell carcinoma
