1.3 Energy and equilibria Flashcards
Define the first law of thermodynamics
Principle of conservation of energy, states that energy in an isolated system cannot be created or destroyed.
- also known as the principle of conversion of energy
Define Thermodynamic
The study of energy
Define Energy
Something that causes change that can be measured
examples of energy
Sunlight - Light energy
Glucose - Chemical energy
Heat - Thermal energy
Example of the first law of thermodynamics
Photosynthesis
Sunlight(light) turns to Glucose (chemical) through transformation
Example of the second law of thermodynamics
Respiration
Glucose(chemical) turn to heat(thermal) throught transformation
Entropy
the measure of the amount of disorder in a system
How does the first law of thermodynamics apply to the food chain and the ecosystem?
Energy can only be changed from one form to another. Energy for the functioning of an ecosystem comes from the Sun. Solar energy is absorbed by plants where in it is converted to stored chemical energy. Some energy is lost to the surroundings as heat.
Define the second law of thermodynamics
living systems loose energy over time
or
entropy of a system increases over time
