1.3 – Computer networks, connections and protocols Flashcards
What is a network?
A computer network is two or more computers connected together in order to share resources and exchange information.
What does LAN stand for?
Local Area Network
What are some features of LANs?
- Two or more computers
- Usually connects a building or business office.
- All nodes connect to the switch
Pros and cons of wired connections?
- Much faster (1000Mb/s compared to 54Mb/s)
- Harder to wire up.
Why would an office use a LAN?
- Users can access files on any workstation.
- Peripherals can be shared between users
- Backups and updates can be made centrally rather than at each individual workstation.
- Data can be shared and transmitted easily.
What are some downsides to using a LAN?
- If the file server fails no one can access their files.
- Many users can slow the network down.
- Viruses can easily spread through the network.
- Cost
How can the LAN’s security be improved?
- Better passwords
- Access rights
- Backups
- Encryption
What does WAN stand for?
Wide Area Network
What is a WAN?
A network that connects two or more LANs together.
Advantages of a WAN.
- Allows LANs to connect together.
- Allows collaboration across continents.
- Allows file and data sharing between LANs.
Disadvantages of LANs.
- Expensive
- May be hard to fix as falls out of companies’ responsibility.
What is bandwidth measured in?
Bits per second or bit rate
What is the bandwidth of a standard wifi connection?
56-150 Mbps
What is the unit for bandwidth?
Mbps or Gbps
What is bandwidth?
The maximum amount of data that can be transferred across a connection every second.
