13. Combinatorial Innovation Flashcards

1
Q

What is combinatorial innovation?

A

It is a cumulative and additive approach to tech development and means that we build new things out of previously developed things. Meaning that tech builds itself organically from itself which leads to radical discontinuities that nobody could have anticipated.

Q

How did Wingtra become such a success?

A

Because it was a combinatorial innovation where students bring together their knowledge and skills and where they used an open innovation approach to be able too combine as much tech and knowledge as possible into the drone.

Q

Is open innovation a part of the combinatorial innovation theory?

A

Yes it is because if we want to put together different things and develop something new, It is important to be open in the ecosystem (users, university, government, competitors) and share knowledge and ideas among each other.

Q

What is the difference between modular architecture and layered modular architecture and how does it fits into the combinatorial innovation theory?

A

The difference is that the degree of the following three is higher in the layered:

  • reprogrammability
  • homogenisation of data
  • self-reference

So that product boundary is not that fixed, and where there are heterogenous layers following multiple design hierarchies (instead of having a single design hierarchy). And further, we have product-agnostic components instead och product-specific. Lastly, we have layers that are coupled through standards and protocols that are shared by firms.

Q

What does it mean with product-agnostic?

A

Having a product that’s agnostic means having a tech solution that’s able to interact with any systems or any products in the same category.

Q

Layered architecture of digital tech, describe it.

A

The layers cons tis of devices, networks, services and content. The layers enable two important separations: 1)sep between service and device due to the reprogrammability, and 2) sep between content and network as a result of homogenisation of data.

This layered arch enables new innovations by combining components from different architectural layers.
