[13] Bioenergetics- Energy Expenditure, Production, and Balance Flashcards
What is the basic concept in human physiology being discussed?
Bioenergetics: Energy expenditure, production, and balance
Define “bioenergetics”.
It is the study of how organisms manage their energy resources, involving the chemical processes and conversions that take place in the body.
What are the three main macronutrients that provide energy to the body?
- Proteins
- Carbohydrates
- Fats
How does the body expend energy?
Through basal metabolic functions, physical activity, and the process of digestion and absorption of food (thermic effect of food).
What is the primary energy currency in the body?
Adenosine triphosphate (ATP)
What is the process by which glucose is converted to ATP?
Glycolysis
What is the process of ATP production in the presence of oxygen called?
Aerobic respiration
Which process generates more ATP: aerobic respiration or anaerobic respiration (glycolysis)?
Aerobic respiration
How does the body store excess energy?
It stores it as glycogen in the liver and muscles and as fat in adipose tissue.
Define “energy balance”.
It is the relationship between energy intake (from food and drink) and energy output (through metabolism and physical activity).
What is the result of a positive energy balance?
Weight gain
What is the result of a negative energy balance?
Weight loss
What is basal metabolic rate (BMR)?
It is the rate at which the body uses energy while at rest to maintain vital functions such as breathing, circulation, and cell production.
How is ATP produced from fats?
Through a process called beta-oxidation
What is the role of the mitochondria in energy production?
They are the sites of aerobic respiration where most ATP is produced.
