1.3 Flashcards
organization of the human nervous system
what is the peripheral nervous system?
all nerves lie outside the brain and spinal cord
what are nerves?
bundle of neuron fibers that are routed together in the PNS
what is the somatic nervous system?
nerves that connect to voluntary skeletal muscles and to sensory receptors
what are afferent nerve fibers?
axons that carry information inwards to the central nervous system from the periphery
what are efferent nerve fibers?
axons that carry information outwards from the central nervous system to the periphery
what is the autonomous nervous system?
nerves that connect to the heart, blood vessels, smooth muscles and glands
what is sympathetic division?
branch of the ANS that mobilizes the body’s resources for emergencies (fight or flight response)
what is parasympathetic division?
branch of the ANS that generally conserves bodily resources
the central nervous system consists of?
spinal cord and brain
what is the spinal cord?
spinal cord connects the brain to the rest of the body through the PNS
what is the brain?
fills the upper portion of the skull and contains billions of interacting cells that integrate information from inside and outside of the body.
