1.3. Flashcards
thou art to ugly to attend on me
Faustus is prevented as excessively arrogant, and ignores the outward appearance (physiognomy) which reflects Mephistopheles inner evil, therefore emphasizing Faustus as foolish as he isn’t understanding the power dynamic and being naïve
howpliant is this mephistopheles
meph is presented as obedient, as he follows orders from the entitled Faustus who acts as if he already has omnipotent power. furthermore he is so blinded by his overwhelming desires he’s overlooking mephs manipulation and machevillion
i am a servant to great lucifer
through the use of partly formal language we see the respect meph has for the power higher than him which again juxtaposes Faustus who disrespects the omnipotent figures, also presnt in wagner the stock clown/ servant
we fly in hopeto get his glorious soul
his meaning Faustus - he’s presented as blunt and by still being deceptive in order to gain Faustus’s trust
for he confounds hell in elysium
the antithesis is emphatic of Faustus foolishness and ignorance, which is perhaps intentional to justify his gluttonous desire that he is blinded by. Faustus should have this knowledge as he is an expert in divinity
