1.2.5.3. Muscles of Hip Joint Abduction Flashcards
What movements can be carried out at the Hip Joint?
- Flexion
- Extension
- Abduction
- Adduction
- Lateral Rotation
- Medial Rotation
- Circumduction
What are the main Abductor Muscles of the Hip Joint?
- Gluteus Medius Muscle
- Gluteus Minimus Muscle
- Deep Gluteal Muscles:
- a) Piriformis Muscle
- b) Obturator Internus Muscle
- c) Superior and Inferior Gemelli Muscles
Where is the Gluteus Medius Muscle located?
In between the Gluteus Maximus and the Gluteus Minimus Muscles
How is the Gluteus Medius Muscle described?
Fan-Shaped, similar to the Gluteus Minimus Muscle
Where does the Gluteus Medius Muscle originate from?
Gluteal Surface of the Ilium
Where does the Gluteus Medius Muscle attach distally?
Lateral Surface of the Greater Trochanter of the Femur
What is the function of the Gluteus Medius Muscle?
- Abduction of the Lower Limb at the Hip Joint
- Medial Rotation of the Lower Limb at the Hip Joint
- During Locomotion, it secures the Pelvis, preventing Pelvic Drop of the opposite Limb
- The Posterior Fibers are thought to produce a small amount of Lateral Rotation of the Lower Limb at the Hip Joint
What is the innervation of the Gluteus Medius Muscle?
The Superior Gluteal Nerve
Where is the Gluteus Minimus Muscle located, in relation to the other Gluteal Muscles?
- It is the Deepest and Smallest of the Superficial Gluteal Muscles (Gluteus Maximus and Medius Muscles)
- It is Superficial to the Deep Gluteal Muscles (Piriformis, Gemelli)
What is the Gluteus Minimus Muscle’s shape and function similar to?
Gluteus Medius Muscle, it is also Fan-Shaped
Where does the Gluteus Minimus Muscle originate from?
Ilium
Where does the Gluteus Minimus Muscle attach distally?
It converges to form a Tendon, inserting into the Anterior Side of the Greater Trochanter
What is the function of the Gluteus Minimus Muscle?
- Abduction of the Lower Limb at the Hip Joint
- Medial Rotation of the Lower Limb at the Hip Joint
- During Locomotion, it secures the Pelvis, preventing Pelvic Drop of the opposite Limb
What is the innervation of the Gluteus Minimus Muscle?
Superior Gluteal Nerve
Where are the Deep Gluteal Muscles located?
Underneath the Gluteus Minimus Muscle
