12.4 anaerobic respiration Flashcards
1
Q
what is the condition to keep glycolysis working in anaerobic respiration?
A
NAD must be recycled to remove H atoms from TP -> pyruvate
2
Q
what is produced in anaerobic respiration in animals?
A
lactic acid / lactase
3
Q
how is lactic acid produced in anaerobic respiration?
A
pyruvate is reduced to lactase (accepts H atoms) & reduced NAD is oxidised to NAD
4
Q
how is lactase used by the body?
A
transferred to liver (toxic)
- broken down aerobically -> creates oxygen debt
5
Q
what is produced in anaerobic respiration by plants?
A
acetyl aldehyde -> ethanol
6
Q
how is ethanol produced?
A
- bacteria, fungi (yeast) & waterlogged roots:
- pyruvate loses 1 CO2 -> ethanal (acetyl aldehyde) -> ethanol (by accepting/reduced by H+ from reduced NAD)
