1.2.2 - The Seven Layers of the OSI Models Flashcards
Network process to Application • Provides network services to the applications of the user, such as e-mail, file transfer, and terminal emulation.
Application Layer
End-to-end Connections • Handles transportation issues between hosts • Ensure data transport reliability • Establishes, maintains, and terminates circuits • Provides reliability through fault detection and recovery information flow control
Transport Layer
• Routes data packets • Select best paths to deliver data • Provides logic addressing and path selection
Network Layer
The physical layer defines the electrical, mechanical, procedural, and functional specifications for activating, maintaining, and deactivating the physical link between end systems.
Physical Layer
Data Representation • Ensures that the information sent at the application layer is readable by the receiving system.
Presentation Layer
Interhost Communication • Establishes, manages, and terminates sessions between applications
Session Layer
• Defines how data is formatted for transmission and how access to the physical media is controlled. • Provides error detection
