Marriage is a sacrament that is permanent, exclusive and life-long. God joins husband and wife together spiritually during the marriage ceremony and that cannot be undone. Even if a couple legally divorce (called a civil divorce) the spiritual union between them cannot be dissolved.

“Therefore what God has joined together, let no one separate”
