Open source software (OSS) is a type of software where source code is made publicly available.
What is closed source software?
Closed source software (CSS) is a type of software where source code is not made publicly avaliable. Code in closed source software is generally compiled.
What are some characteristics of open source software?
Open source software is generally free as the source code is public
Users can modify the software to suit their needs
Anyone can have a part in the development of software
Open source software can lack polish as there is no paid programming team to remove all bugs and errors
What are some characteristics of closed source software?
Closed source software generally costs
Users are unable to modify the software to suit their needs
Only the software’s programming team can have a part in the development of the software

What is off-the-shelf software?
Off-the-shelf software is purchasable from a commercial source as a finished product/
What is custom software?
Custom software is purchasable and then altered to suit the requirements of an individual or organisation
What is bespoke software?
Bespoke software is software written from the ground up. You can write it yourself or someone can be paid to do it.
What are some characteristics of off-the-shelf software?
It is relatively cheap,
It is easily available,
It will have been thoroughly tested,
There will be lots of user support.

An application is a software program that provides some kind of interactive service to the user. They always provide a user interface.
