Layout of the City
The United States Capitol is the meeting point of the four sections of the city, designated Northwest, Northeast, Southwest and Southeast. The dividing lines are North Capitol Street, South Capitol Street, East Capitol Street and the Mall, radiating from the four sides of the Capitol Building.
When facing a dividing line, regardless of the section, the even numbers are on the right and
the odd numbers on the left. In general, numbered streets run north and south, alphabetically
named streets run east and west. In general, when going east and west from a dividing line,
the streets are laid out in numerical sequence, i.e., 1st Street, 2nd Street, 3rd Street, etc.
In general, when going north and south from a dividing line, the streets are laid out in
alphabetical sequence, i.e., A Street, B Street, C Street, etc., followed by another sequence
of streets, the names of which contain two syllables such as Adams, Bryant, etc., and a third
sequence composed of streets, the names of which contain three syllables such as Allison, Buchanan, etc. In some sections of the District of Columbia, there is a fourth sequence of streets, the names of which contain two or more syllables such as Aspen, Butternut, etc. Interspersed with streets are avenues, places and roads which would be numbered in accordance with the streets with which they are relatively parallel.
