To hold data/programs being used by the CPU so it has faster access.

- examples are Dynamic RAM, Static RAM
- needed to hold data used by the CPU to minimise time

- non volatile
- read only
- example is Flash Memory
- used as a memory chip to store data without power, but data must be in the RAM to work.

A
A hard-drive space which acts as the RAM when the RAM is overloaded

To extend the use of memory and allows us to have memory protection
