1.2.1 Atomic model Flashcards

1
Q

Tell me about Dalton’s model.

A

In 1803, he suggested that everything was made of atoms and that atoms cannot be split.
Scientist improved this with the discovery of sub-atomic particles..

Q

Tell me about Thompson’s Plum pudding model.

A

In 1897, J. J. Thompson discovered electrons. Described as a positive charged sphere with electons embedded.

Q

Tell me about Rutherford’s nuclear model.

A

1909, Rutherford discovered alpha particles could bounce off atoms.
He concluded that most of atoms mass was in the nucleus containing positively charged particles called protons.

Q

Tell me about the modern atomic model

A

Niels Bohr discovered that electrons orbit the nucleus at fixed distances.
In 1932, James Chadwick discovered that some particles in the nucleus have no charge - neutrons
