Federal Republic
Form of government where power is shared between states and a central government. People hold power, and elect representatives to exercise it.
Direct Democracy
State or local government allows citizens to directly vote on policies.
Initiative
A citizen proposes a policy, it’s placed on the ballot and other citizens vote directly for or against the measure.
Participatory Democracy
Emphasizes broad participation in civil society and politics.
Referendum
A state or local legislature passes a measure, then it’s placed on a ballot for citizen approval.
Pluralist Democracy
Emphasizes the roles of groups and factions in policy-making.
Elite Democracy
Emphasizes limited participation in civil society and politics.
