1.2 - Velocity and acceleration Flashcards
What is the velocity of an object?
Its speed in a given direction
How can an object accelerate while moving at a steady speed?
By changing direction
What happens to the velocity of an object if its changes direction?
It changes, even if the speed stays the same
What do we call it when the velocity of an object changes?
We say it accelerates
In a = v-u/t, what does each letter represent and what is the unit?
- a is acceleration in metres per second squared, m/s^2
- v is final velocity in metres per second, m/s
- u is initial velocity in metres per second, m/s
- t is time taken for change in seconds, s
What is the SI unit of acceleration?
Metres per second squared
What is the SI unit of velocity?
Metres per second
What is deceleration?
Negative acceleration - when the value calculated for acceleration is negative
What is the velocity of a runner doing a lap around a circular track?
Zero metres per second (the overall direction does not change)
