- Tx of dermatoses
- Phototherapy = use of artificial UV light for therapeutic purposes
- Photochemical effect = use of artificial UV light with a chemical photosensitizingagent for therapeutic purposes

- PUVA = Carcinogienic
- UVA1 = Declining use

- BBUVB = Declining us
- NBUVB = Less cancer risk, more common

- Photogermicidal
- Not commonly used

Ultraviolet radiation
A
- Absorbed in 1 – 2 mm of skin
- Physiologic effects = very superficicial
- Alters biochemistry and metabolism
- May cause cell damage and death
- Inflammatory reaction
- Increased capillary permeability
- Skin should be tested fist

Minimal erythema dose
A
faint redness 24 hours after Tx
- Can also estimate dose based on Fitzpatrick’s Skin Phototype

A
- Psoriasis
- Atopic dermatitis
- Vitiligo
- Mycosis fungoides

UV contraindications
A
- Over the eye
- Malignant skin
- History of melanoma
- SLE, herpex
- Tuberculosis
- Kidney, cardiac, and liver diseases
- Hyperthyroidism
- Diabetes mellitus
- Acute eczema or dermatitis

Photosensitizing Drugs
A
- Antibacterial/antimicrobial
- Thiazide diuretics
- Other meds
- Phenothiazine – tranquilizers
- Psoralens – psoriasis
- Sulfonylureas
- Diphenhydramine
