1.2) Tissues Flashcards
Tissues:
a group of cells that work together for the same function
5 main types of plant tissues
1) Epidermis
2) Parenchyma
3) Collenchyma and Sclerencyma
4) Xylem and Phloem
5) Meristematic tissue
Epidermis (location)
covers the surface of the plant
Epidermis ( structure)
single layer cells ,no inter cellular air space, usually
square shaped and have a thick outer wall to protect
plants from damage
Epidermis ( function)
produces a layer of waxy, waterproof material, called the cuticle, which prevents water loss
Special epidermis :
Guard cells: allows gases to enter and exit the leaf and the epidermal cells that contain chloroplast
Location of special epidermis
found in the epidermis mainly on the underside of leaves
Stomata
surround the small openings in the epidermis
Gases that enter and exit through the stomata
oxygen,carbon dioxide and water vapour
Parenchyma (location)
found below the epidermis
Parenchyma (structure)
the cells are round and rough, have the thin walls ,act as packing tissue between the epidermis and conducting tissues
Parenchyma (function)
the thin walls allow the movement of water and salts through the plant
the large vacuoles store food and water
the large inter cellular air spaces allow gaseous to take place in the internal parts of the plant
specialized parenchyma
cholorenchyma, cells that contain chloroplast ,found in the stems and leaves
Collenchyma
found under the epidermis
Collenchyma (structure)
cell walls of the collenchyma are thickened with cellulose . No inter cellular spaces
Collenchyma (function)
In some plants such as celery, collenchyma forms strengthening ridges, provides support in stems and leaf stalks ,its flexible
Sclerenchyma
found in stems and roots and also in fruits and shells of nuts
Sclerenchyma (structure)
have thick walls that contain a substances called lignin as wells as cellulose.
Sclerenchyma (functions)
the lignin makes the cells walls of scelrenchyma waterproof , the thickened cell walls provide strength and support stems and roots . the cells contents die so its an non living plant tissue
Stone cells
small, round and hard, they give some fruits a gritty texture. found in the flesh e.g,strawberries or pears
Sclerenchyma fibers
long with thickened walls, which makes stems and roots tough and rigid
Xylem
transports water and minerals salts from roots to parts of the plants
two types of Xylem cells
trachieds and vessels
trachieds
cells with overlapping ends that transport water in the plants
Vessels
cells joined end to end that transport water to the plants
Phloem
transport food the from the leaves to other parts of the plants
two types of Phloem cells
sieve tubes and companion cells
sieve tubes
transport food ,the ends of the tubes are called sieve plates
companion cells
small cells found next to the sieve tube, contain nuclei and controls the functions of the sieve tubes.
Meristematic tissue
M for mitosis . responsible for the growth in plants ,makes roots and stems grow longer and wider by the process of cell division
