1.2- Tissues Flashcards
What are the 4 Body Tissues?
Epithelial, Connective, Muscle, Nervous
Epithelial
- forms the linings, coverings, and glandular tissue of the body
- protects underlying structures
- act as barriers, passage and excretion of substances
- Consists of layers of cells (one kind of cells inside & a different kind outside)
- Cells are packed tightly together to form continuous sheets
Skin, intestines, lungs
Connective
- Protects, supports, and binds together other body tissues
adipose tissue (fat), cartilage, bone, blood, and lymph
Muscle
Specialized to contract and cause movement and generate heat.
skeletal smooth and cardiac
Cardiac Muscle
an involuntary striated muscle tissue found only in the heart and is responsible for the ability of the heart to pump blood.
heart
Smooth Muscle
involuntary muscle involuntary movements like regulation of blood flow through vital organs and movement of materials along digestive and urinary passageways.
stomach, intestines, bladder and uterus
Skeletal Muscle
- muscle that connects bone and skin
- help hold the skeleton together
- give the body shape
- help with everyday movements (Voluntary Muscle)
shoulder muscles, hamstring muscles and abdominal muscles
Nervous
- Composed of neurons that receive and send electrical signals in the body
- Respond to stimuli and transmits impulses and together with supporting cells make up the brain, spinal cord, and nerves.
Brain, Spinal Cord
How do forensic anthropologists use bone to determine sex
- Female-
Skull: round eye sockets, v-shaped mandible, smoother frontal bone
Pelvis: rounded pelvis, wider pubic arch - Male
Skull: square eye sockets, u-shaped mandible, pronounced frontal bone, heart shaped pelvis, angled-in coccyx
How do forensic anthropologists use bone to determine race
Determined best by skull
* European
More “surprised” eye sockets, forehead aligns with nose and chin in a straight line
* Africain
More square eye sockets, forehead more pronounced, mandible more pronounced
* Asian
More rectangular eye sockets, nose is more vertical, chin is receding
How do forensic anthropologists use bone to determine age
- Determined by Humerus or Femur or Tibia
- Check for fused bones
How do forensic anthropologists use bone to determine age height
Determined best by Femur
* Length
Formula to estimate height using **Femur
Male: ( 2.32 x MLF ) + 65.53 +- 3.94
Female: ( 2.32 x MLF ) + 54.10 +- 3.72
MLF = length of femur (USING CM)
Formula to estimate height using **Humerus
Male: (2.97 x MLH ) + 73.5 +- 3.94
Female: (3.14 x MLH) + 65 +- 3.72
MLH= Humerus Length (USING CM)
Formula to estimate height using **Radius
Male: (3.7 x MLR) + 80.5 +- 3.94
Female: (3.9 x MLR) + 73.41 +- 3.72
MLR = Radius Length (USING CM)
