- For Catholics she was illegitimate as her parents’ marriage had been illegal so she has no claim to the throne

- Many felt that a single women could not offer a strong, effective monarchy
- If she married it would deter foreign ruler
- Marriage would lead to an heir which would settle issue of succession after Eliz’ death
- There was fear that she could not choose her advisers wisely
