12 Terms Flashcards
Thermal Equilibrium
Condition where 2 systems have same temp and no net heat flows from 1 system to the other
Heat of reaction
Change of enthalpy of a chem process and calculates amount of energy per mole released
Condesation
Phase change from a gas to a liquid, substance and it’s gas phase condense below its boiling point
Kinetic energy
Energy of motion
Specific heat
Amount of energy it takes to raise the temp of 1 gram of a substance by 1 degree kelvin
Vaporization
Happens to an element/compound and it is a transition phase to vapor (evaporating and boiling)
Endothermic reaction
Chemical reaction that requires an input of energy to go from reactants to products/they absorb energy
Exothermic reaction
Chemical reaction that releases energy going from reactants to products/negative enthalpy/releases energy
Joule
Fundamental SI unit of energy (heat)
Calorie
Older unit of heat/1 calorie = 4.184 Joules
Kilo calorie
Unit of energy for 1000 calories (1 kilocal = 1 large cal)
Sublimation
Chemical process where solid turns into a gas w/o going through a liquid stage
Absolute zero
Temp where molecular motion ceases
Law of conservation of energy
Energy can never be created or destroyed, just converted from one form to the next
Temperature
Measure of average kinetic energy of atoms or molecules, units of degrees F, C, or K
