1.2 storage media Flashcards
magnetic storage
most common form of secondary storage within pcs
type is a floppy disk but these have been replaced by ssd
magnetic tape
high storage capacity but data has to be accessed in order (serial access) so its generally used only by companies to back up or archive large amounts of data
magnetic storage charecteristics
large capacity and cheaper per gb then ssd
not durable and not very portable when powered on moving it can damage the device
relatively quick access speed but slower than ssds
optical storage
uses a laser to project beams of light onto a spinning disc
slowest of the four types of secondary storage
traditionally internal but external disc drives can be bought from devices like laptops
optical storage characteristics
low capacity
not durable, discs very fragile and can break or scratch easily
very thin and portable
slowest access speeds
solid state storage
ssds are replacing hdds, in modern computers
generally quieter, faster and use less power
memory cards like the sd card in a digital camera or a micro sd card in a smartphone
solid state characteristics
high capacity but more expensive per gigabyte than magnetic
usually durable but cheap usb sticks can snab or break
small size makes it portable
fastest access speeds because they contain no moving parts
paper storage
relatively inexpensive
can be environmentally damaging and requires physical security methods
paper characteristics
low capacity also takes up physical space
poor durability can easily tear
portability varies, can be easily folded, however large stacks may be difficult and expensive to transport
