12. Redox Reactions Flashcards
What are reduction-oxidation reactions?
Redox reactions are reactions that involve the electron transfer from the reducing agent to the oxidising agent
What is another word for oxidising agent?
oxidant
What is another word for reducing agent?
reductant
Do oxidising agents oxidise or reduce?
confusing right? oxidising agents and oxidants reduce, which means they gain electrons.
Remember OILRIG (oxidation is loss and reduction is gain)
Do reducing agents oxidise or reduce?
confusing again! reducing agents oxidise things, which means they lose electrons
OIL RIG
When something gets oxidised, what is happening? Explain in detail.
when something is oxidised, a oxidizing agent oxidizes it
Something that oxidizes is a reducing agent
Which happens first in a redox reaction, the reduction or the oxidation?
LOL, wrong. Or maybe you got it right. They happen at the same time.
Give an example of a reduction half equation
reduction is.. gain? and remember its LHS
so a (cation) + electrons -> b (neutral)
Fe²+ plus 2e¯ = Fe (neutral)
Give an example of a oxidation half equation
oxidation is.. loss? and remember its LHS
so b (neutral) -> a (cation) + electrons
define a half reaction
half reactions are balanced chemical equations that show the loss or gain of electrons in a redox reaction
they split the redox reaction into its reduction and oxidation reactions, then add them up like simultaneous equations in enthalpy, for example.
DAILY REMINDER TO WRITE ?
ur states bitch
steps to balance half equations (go over this intently)
o Balance the elements other than H and O
o Balance O by adding H2O
o Balance H by adding H+
o Compare the charges and add a number of e- to the relevant side to balance
