What is a professional?
Related to work that needs a high level of education or special training
Professional body
A formal association of specifically educated members that assures their ability through examination and certification and their trustworthiness through regulation, and provides support and advice to achieve those aims
What are the two professional bodies?
Architect’s Registration Board and Royal Institute of British Architects
RIBA
-Intellectual basis, independence, integrity, impartiality, consultancy, and established practices
-Representative institute, protection of interests, corporate voice, advancement of knowledge and expertise
What did ARB replace
In 1996 Under Housing Grants, Construction and Regeneration Act replaced ARCUK with ARB
ARB
-All of the provisions concerning the registration of architects in the UK are found within this act
-Created ARB as statutory regulatory body
-Responsibility of defining the standards of professional conduct and practice of registered persons
What is the purpose of the ARB
-UKS COMPETENT AUTHORITY FOR ARCHITECTS
-Maintainjng the Register of Architects
-Prescribing qualifications for entry to the Register
-Issuing a Code of Conduct and Practice to maintain standards
-Investigating complaints & Operating a disciplinary process
-Prosecuting those who misuse title ‘architect’
UK’s Competent Authority for architects
-Members must demonstrate that they are competent to practice
-The Building Safety Act (2021) gives ARB power to monitor the training and development of architects throughout their careers
-ARB will monitor continuing professional development (CPD) that will encourage architects to maintain and develop their competence to practise
-Provides the profession’s assurance to the public that those in the Register will carry out their work with appropriate knowledge and skill
ARB-CPD
-Architects will have to carry out CPD every year and conform they have undertaken it when they pay their retention fee in order to remain registered
-No minimum number of activities or hours just CPD that is relevant to their practice
-may have to do COD on core topics mandated by ARB currently H&S and Sustainability
-Architects will need to record the CPD activities they carry out and the outcomes from them-Also have to write a reflective report
-ARB will annually review a selection of architects’ CPD records

What are the three main principles of the RIBA?
-Principle 1-Integrity-Members shall act with honesty and integrity at all times
-Principle 2-Competence-Members to act competently, conscientiously and responsible in performance of their work
-Principle 3-Relationships-Members to respect the relevant rights of others
