a collection of programs that work together to provide a user interface between the user and computer

what is embedded + example
designed for a single device which as a small number of jobs to perform
washing machine
what is distributed + example
controls a host of computers which may be connected across a LAN
designed to spread different tasks across a range of computers so to share processing power
what is real time
designed to perform task within a given time period eg an areoplane system
what is multi tasking
enables the user to carry out task simultanously , this is done by slicing to quickly switch between programs and applications in memory.
eg house PC
what is multi user
enables several users to access a systems resources at the same time
