- I am going into IB because it has the steepest learning curve of any career path in finance. The people I have spoken to within the industry says that you learn everything on the job. And while my undergraduate studies have prepared me for a career in finance, my understanding that most of the skills I will be using throughout the rest of my career will be acquired on the job. I understand the hours and the workload, and I want to work incredibly hard to gain real-world experience that isn’t available in any other profession at this stage in my career. I know these skills will prepare me for anything I want to do later in my career.
What has been your favorite job so far?
Bartending
- I have worked in my family’s fine dining restaurant since I was 13 and I take great pride in the reputation of the restaurant
- worked up from prep cook/dishwasher, busser, expeditor, and then bartender
- Anyone who has bartended knows that it is a very stressful job and there is so much to information to absord
- I was thrown into the job in the middle of the summer on Cap Cod and had to learn on the fly
- The combination of being fast paced and still requiring absolute precision made it very appealing to me
What has been your least favorite job so far?
Investment Compliance
- This summer I am working at john Hancock investment management where I manage a compliance data base and assist in monitoring and reporting
- When interviewing for this internship I was told about all the teams that there are such as valuation, finance, and private markets which sounded very interesting to me
- however after I secured the internship and the start date got closer i was notified that I was placed on the compliance team
- while I am learning many things about the IM industry the work is rather dull
